Dear Cousins.... With the passing of Aunt Sally, I just want to share some memories.... Aunt Sally was my very favorite aunt. We all have one, and she was mine. All the aunts had their favorite "southern kid" - I was Aunt Sally's. She was wonderful to my family, but she was especially wonderful to me. She was so kind. During one of their visits ,on a hot summer day, we left our small house in town and started walking... going nowhere in particular....we walked into the jewelry store from, just a couple blocks from home. I dont know if she planned it, or it just hit her to do it, but we walked in, and she said, I have a young lady that would like to get her ears pierced." My eyes lit up like a ROW of Christmas trees... I know it s no big deal in todays world, but as a kid in 1976, getting your ears pierced was a BIG deal, and not asking mom and dad beforehand, well, lol.... that just made it even so much more exciting!!! After all, other than the african american girls, only 2 of the girls on my classroom had PIERCED ears....I mean, I was only 11!!!! In the South, girls typically get them until we were 14ish . I will never forget that feeling I was so cool!!! I remember her visits to see with her sisters, sometimes twice a year. It didnt matter which sisters were coming, she was coming with them Polly, Eukie, Bonnie, Laura, Diddy, Gayle,...... Aunt Sally was always with them! Randy and I often got confused about which one was Eukie and which one was Sally... Aunt Sally taught us to tell the difference by looking to see which one had BIG diamond rings on...LOL!!!!! (Aunt Eukie always wore a big rings Aunt Polly always came in the door laughing... How are ya kiddo?? Aunt Eukie always had to pee...lol... Aunt Bonnie always came in with a headache.... Aunt Diddy always came with a big hug, and Aunt Laura always came with a ton of luggage!!!! We loved their visits, looked forward to them so much. Loved the late night poker games, where getting the adults drinks and emptying ashtrays was a privilege... Loved every single minute of it. Dad adored taking them all to Charleston and play tour guide through downtown. He loved doing that... It was a treat if there was enough room for one of us kids to go. That didnt happen too often.... I finally got to go the year Stephanie came down with her.... On Moms very last trip to Michigan, she was working on a blanket for my daughter. Aunt Sally wanted to help, and she did. Lexie still has her blanket, literally loved to pieces... Seeing your parents/grandparents so often gave us kids down here a sense of belonging, to a much bigger family than our little 6. They genuinely loved mom, and us kids as well... Mom made Aunt Eukie our godmother because she loved us all so much, and because we would have been surrounded by the love of all her sisters.... Our family life was shaky quite often, but knowing, if only subconsciously, that they would take care of us should something terrible happen always made me feel safe and loved.... It was one of the few constants we had as young children. I am forever thankful for that... I saw her last in 1996, before her health began to decline. I, my husband and 1 year old daughter came and stayed in her home. She made sure everything was perfect for us. Pristine actually... but thats no surprise is it... Mike,Linda, Steph, Shane, and Saline...she loved you all so much, and swelled with pride everytime she spoke of you...... Thanks for the memories, and thanks for the love:)...Godspeed Aunt Sally, Mom and Aunt Diddy have been waiting on you....My heart and prayers are with you... Love to you all, and Please Keep in touch!!! Kendall 843-893-2427
