Obituary of Jan Marie Groves

Jan Marie (Kurtz) Groves was born in Monroe, Michigan on January 25, 1952.  She was the eldest of two daughters of Fred J. Kurtz and Irene Elnora (Baumann) Kurtz.  She graduated from Monroe High School in 1972 and enrolled at Monroe County Community College where she obtained her associates degree.

Jan and David Nathan Groves were joined in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe by the late Reverend Raymond Malotky on September 30, 1972.  Although she worked at the Independent Dairy, for her father at Raisin Valley Title Company, and at the Monroe County Courthouse in the Monroe Auditor Office, being a homemaker was truly her favorite accomplishment.  She worked for thirteen years as an administrative assistant and office manager at Hilgraeve prior to her retirement.

The couple was blessed with three sons, and Jan cared for the needs of her family raising the boys in a Christian home.  They were educated at Trinity Lutheran School, and she was very active in their lives serving as a volunteer in many different capacities.  Jan aided those less fortunate for many years as a Sunday afternoon participant with the Community of Needs Meals, served with the funeral luncheon committee, and she taught Ladies’ Bible Study for decades.  Passionate about her faith and her relationship with Christ, even as her health declined the last year of her life, she only ventured out of the home to visit church and attend Bible study.

Jan loved spending time with family.  Her cooking always brought them together and this warmed her heart.  She enjoyed reading on many subjects with the Bible being her favorite.  Jan filled her time with sewing, crafting, and caring for her home.  She loved being in nature, tending to her flowers, bird watching, or lounging in the pool and hot tub.  She was a frequent fixture around the neighborhood cruising around on her golf cart.

Jan Marie Groves, age 72, of Monroe passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Tuesday; December 10, 2024.  Her passing was preceded by her parents.

To cherish her memory she leaves her beloved husband of fifty-two years: David Groves of Monroe; three sons:  Michael (Karen) of Traverse City, Daniel (Jessica) of Monroe, and Adam (Jessica) of Maybee; a sister: Kathy (Reverend Tim) Azzam of Oscoda; two grandchildren:  Laurel and Ranger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She will lie in state from 10:00am until 11:00am on Monday; December 16, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church; 323 Scott Street, Monroe, Michigan 48161.  A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00am also at the church with Pastor John Carrier officiating.  Procession will follow to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery for burial.  Her care has been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.
