Obituary of Edgar Turner
Edgar Turner was born on August 31, 1929, in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of five children born to the union of Troy E Turner and Della J. (Goins) Turner. Edgar attended Monroe High School, graduating with the Class of 1948. While in high school, Edgar was a member of the 1947 and 1948 varsity baseball team, and in fact pitched in the 1948 championship game. In January of 1951, Edgar enlisted in the United States Army where he obtained the rank of Corporal. He proudly received his honorable discharge after serving during the Korean War in December of 1952.
On February 4, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, Edgar married the love of his life, the former Mary McAleer. Together the couple was blessed with a wonderful son: James. To provide for his family, Edgar was employed for thirty years as a firefighter for the City of Monroe. He retired in September of 1989. In addition, he also worked as a bricklayer for many years.
Edgar was an active member of the Monroe Elks Lodge #1503, the Monroe Moose Lodge, and the Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1138. He owned and operated Turner Music Amusement Machines with Mary and James from 1960 until 1985. Edgar was the proud owner of several racehorses for many years and always stayed active whether he was pitching for the Monroe Twilight League or taking morning walks, a routine he had performed for many years. He loved his hometown sport teams but was especially fond of the Detroit Lions.
Edgar Turner, age 95 of Monroe, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday; October 16, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and under the care of Elara Caring Hospice. His passing was preceded by his parents: Troy and Della Turner; his beloved wife: Mary on December 25, 2022, with whom he shared sixty-six years of holy matrimony; two brothers: Pascal and Roy Turner; and a sister: Hellen Kinsley.
To cherish his memory, he leaves a son: James Turner of Monroe; a grandson: Jason Turner; a sister: Janice K. Bode of Riverview, Michigan; and one great granddaughter: Abbigail Turner.
Private family services were held on Friday; October 18, 2024. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe with Father Henry Rebello of St. Anne Catholic Church officiating.
