Sometimes friendships transcend a lifetime. My Dad, Jack Gauer, and Darrell served in the Marines in Korea together in Graves Registration. Many years later, Darrell and his family and friends Ray and Nancy Nichols, traveled to South Dakota for pheasant hunting. Years later when my Dad passed suddenly, Jean and Darrell jumped into help my Mom (Ricky), through the process of planning my Dad's funeral. Even though my Dad passed in 1981 and my Mom in 1990, Darrell and Jean have kept in touch with each one of Jack and Ricky's kids. Darrell would call periodically to touch base and make sure we were all doing well. The Gauers hope to stay in touch with the Bennetts and send condolences to Jean, Gail, Perry and Mike and families.

Q: What will you miss most about Darrell?
A: Oh, the stories I have heard, many more than once! I learned so much about Darrell in the past six years.
I will cherish the stories about the adventures with his family, the business, the politics, the basketball, his dogs, and his MANY friends. I will especially miss his phone calls which I dubbed my "Daily Darrell Calls", usually just to chat about whatever was on his mind. I am so fortunate to have met him and his family!

Dearest Jean, Gail, Perry, Michael and family, my deepest sympathy and prayers for all of you in hearing the news of Darrell's passing.
My mind was flooded with fond memories of time spent at Bennett
Ambulance with one of his favorite guys, who became my favorite guy!
Don Saul! It was his home away from home for sure, not to mention date nights for a few of us gals. Such fun times!
Thank you for your hospitality for all of us through the years, and your generous gift of love for Don at his passing.
This is one of the hardest journeys, to go on without our husbands, and fathers, may your hearts find hope in knowing that with Gods grace and mercy we will be together with them soon, and join in the eternal reunion!
Much Love, Renee Saul

First of all my deepest sympathies to Jean, Gail, Perry and Michael.
My Dad ,Jack Gauer and Darrell were friends since they met in the Marine Corps as young men. The first time I heard the name Darrell Bennett was when he called my Dad in the middle of a summer afternoon in the early 1970’s. He woke my Dad from his Sunday afternoon nap. Dad was happily surprised that Darrell called. They talked “long distance” for what seemed like forever. When they finally hung up. I had not seen Dad so happy in a long time. All he could say was that his Marine Corp buddy Darrell Bennett was coming pheasant hunting this fall. Dad couldn’t wait to see him.
On the opening day of pheasant season that year, Darrell had a funeral in Monroe, MI. So he called Dad and said he would be flying out in his airplane N7255J on opening day and might be a little late. Darrell apparently jumped in the plane right after the funeral. When he landed in Ipswich, SD, he still wearing his funeral tuxedo with a ruffle shirt. After a drive to our farm, Darrell changed into his brand new hunting clothes. My brother and I thought what a city slicker. However we were surprised at how well he hunted. We thought it must be his Marine Corps training. Little did we know who Darrell was.
After the hunt, Mom made a wonderful supper for all. Then it was time for me to go milk the cow. Darrell said, “Do you want me to show you how to milk a cow?” I thought, I want to see this city slicker milk a cow. So back to the barn we went. To my surprise he milked the cow by hand with as pretty of a rhyme as anybody I have ever heard. Not only that, he sang a couple of Kentucky back woods songs while he was milking. That is when I realized this was not city slicker, he was a farm boy too.
The opening day pheasant season became an annual event at our farm with Darrell. Most years Darrell would bring his hunting buddy, Ray Nichols. After several years, Darrel and Ray brought their whole families out. That is when we all met Jean, Gail, Perry and Michael. Our Dad passed away in 1982 but even after Dad’s passing, Darrell and his crew would still come out occasionally.
The last time Darrell and Ray came out to hunt, they mostly blocked the ends. After that hunt, Darrell asked me to take him to the cemetery where Jake, as he called him, is buried. I’ll never forget Darrell saying “Hell of a way to visit an old friend.” I’m sure God has his hands full with those two reunited again!

So sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. A super great neighbor, how I enjoyed his almost daily visits. Lady and him on either the tractor or mower. Loved hearing the stories, several more than once, from jumping out of the truck as it headed downhill out of control, to the best diners along a certain route, to his days providing ambulance services at racetracks. Rest easy my friend, my Florida winters will never be the same without you. To Jean and family, our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
