Obituary of Penny Lee Johnson
Penny Lee Vergowven was born August 26, 1953, in Monroe, Michigan. She was one of ten children born to the union of John and Joann (Lyons) Vergowven. Penny attended Airport High School in Carleton, Michigan, graduating with the class of 1971. She furthered her education at the Monroe County Community College studying childcare.
Penny and her previous husband Ron Johnson were blessed with two daughters: Carly and Molly. To provide for her family Penny worked as a secretary at the Riverfront Marina in Monroe, Michigan for several years. Penny was an avid sports fan who loved all sports but was especially fond of her Detroit Tigers and the University of Michigan football team. Penny loved listening to the music of Detroit local artist Bob Seger. She was very active and enjoyed playing in the pool league in downtown Monroe as well as playing softball back in the 70’s and early 80’s with her sisters. She always enjoyed working at Campbell’s Bar and the Riverfront Marina. Penny’s most cherished pastime was spending time with her grandson Jakob Lentz, whom she loved very much.
Penny Lee Johnson, age 70 of Monroe, Michigan passed away on Wednesday August 21, 2024, at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Her passing was preceded by her parents; John Vergowven and Joann Lyons. Her sister; Dale and two brothers: Larry and John.
To cherish Penny’s memory, she leaves behind her two daughters: Carly Johnson of Detroit, Michigan and Molly Johnson of Taylor, Michigan; grandson; Jakob Lentz; four sisters; Jan (Frank)Hornbeck, Pam Gisel, Mary (Roy)Prater and Diane (Dennis) Vergowven; two brothers; Mike (Linda) Vergowven and Andrew Vergowven.
A Celebration of Penny’s life will be held later this year. Per Penny’s wishes, to assist with the Gift of Knowledge, her earthly remains have been bequeathed to the University of Michigan Anatomical Donation Program.
