Obituary of Carole B. Russell

Carole B. Masten was born in Maybee, Michigan on May 8, 1943. She and her sister, Beth, were the daughters of Ray Elmer Masten and Ruth Ellen (Beauch) Masten. After graduating from Milan High School in 1961, Carole found herself at a crossroads with her future. While many of her peers were opting for paths in nursing or teaching, she knew those weren't right for her. Instead, she charted her own course and pursued a career as a paralegal at Harris, Lax, Guenzel, and Meier. This decision was one of many throughout her life that showcased her independent spirit and determination to forge her own unique path.  Despite going against the grain, Carole thrived in her role as a paralegal, achieving much success by simply following her own passions and convictions. After leaving the law firm, she finished her career in the Human Resources office in Washtenaw County.

On August 15, 1964, Carole married the love of her life: Frank E. Russell. The happy couple was blessed with the birth of a daughter: Bonnie. To nourish her spiritual needs, she attended worship at Milan and Azalia United Methodist Churches for many years.

As a member of the Eastern Star Masonic Organization, she demonstrated qualities of fellowship and charity, contributing to a network of support to the people within her community. In her early years she was a member of the League of Women Voters; attempting to make sure that all women took the time to exercise their rights. Her dedication to these organizations reflected her values of equality and making a difference in the world.

Carole had a passion for literature, particularly mysteries, which sparked her imagination and filled her days with intrigue. Her love for creating cozy knits like hats, scarves, and throw-blankets brought warmth and comfort to many. 

 

Nature also held a special place in Carole's heart, and she found great comfort in the simple yet profound beauty of the outdoors. One of her favorite places was near the banks of the River Raisin, where she often enjoyed picnics, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the natural world. 

 

Carole's journey as a two-time cancer survivor was a testament to her strength and resilience. Having been cancer-free for 34 years, she became an example of hope and inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Her dedication to the Relay for Life initiative showcased her commitment to supporting cancer research and raising awareness.

Carole B. Russell age 80, of Milan, passed away at Trinity Health in Ypsilanti on Friday; April 26, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones.  Her passing was preceded by her parents.  To cherish her memory, she leaves her husband of almost sixty years: Frank; a daughter: Bonnie Russell (Scott Bridges); and a sister: Beth (Paul) Howell.

Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185 was entrusted with her care. No public services have been planned at this time. Cremation has taken place through Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan, a division of Merkle Enterprises, Inc.
