Obituary of Harold George Holton

Harold George Holton was born in Wyandotte, Michigan on May 22, 1935. He was one of nine children born from the union of Gordon Holton and Hannah (Alten) Holton. For 28 years, he worked tirelessly in maintenance at Mercy Memorial Hospital, selflessly supporting his loved ones before his health required his retirement.

Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed many hobbies and activities that brought him immense happiness. From showing off his remarkable roller-skating skills to his grandchildren to spending peaceful days fishing and boating on Lake Erie, he truly knew how to find joy in the simple things. His love for tinkering with cars not only brought him satisfaction but also allowed him to bond with his son, John, as they vehicles together.

One of the fondest memories his loved ones hold dear is the laughter that filled the room during their euchre and Uno game nights. Harold's infectious laughter, turned his face bright red and making it hard for him to catch his breath, truly highlighted the love and happiness he brought to his family. He cherished all animals but mostly his cats and dogs, but had a special relationship with his Pekingese dog, Mariah.

Harold George Holton, age 88, of Monroe passed away at 10:13pm, on March 31, 2024, at Monroe Springs Rehab and Nursing Center. His passing was preceded by his parents; his first wife: Verna Pelton; a second wife: Paula Alexander; three brothers: Fredrick, Francis, and Charles Holton; two sisters: Doris Holton and Shirley Rennie; and one grandson: Daniel Holton.

To cherish his memory, he leaves three children: Joseph Swisher, Tammy (the late Michael) Hensley, and John (Karen) Holton; a stepson: Christopher (Cindy) Alexander; two sisters: Mary Frick and Betty Farr; a half-sister: Evelyn Huffman; fourteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. 

Friends may gather from 9:30am until 1:30pm on Friday; April 12, 2024, at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185.  A Celebration of His Life will take place at 1:30pm also at Merkle’s with procession to Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle for interment will follow.
