Pat and I are greatly saddened by the passing of Len. He was a good friend and cohort in our adventures in Morocco. He will be sorely missed by many and well-remembered by many around the world!
I don’t know if Len had the travel bug before Morocco. I suppose I am to blame for that as I asked him if he would have an interest in helping me with the operations at Jorf Lasfar. I had worked with Len for 10 years at the Whiting Plant and was very impressed with his professionalism, personality and ability to get along with everyone. I thought those traits would serve him well in a foreign country, and they did!
From the time we first departed for Morocco, until Len and Sue left, we were almost inseparable. Most of the staff at Jorf lived in Casablanca. They commuted about 75 miles each way, every day. We joked at times about their drive and considered getting little sheep stickers for their cars for every time they hit one on the road to work! Len and I felt it would be better for us to live locally to the plant and so we found two houses in the Royal Golf du El Jadida. We did virtually everything together for their first stint in Morocco. Len and I drove back and forth to work every day, ate dinner together nearly every night and played a lot of golf! When Sue and my wife Pat joined us they also became best friends and were nearly inseparable as well. We each had a company car, but there was no provision made for our spouses. So, we would share a ride back and forth and that would leave one of the cars for the wives to use. Pat and Sue also played a lot of golf! Maybe more than Len and I!
A short story about Morocco: Shortly after we arrived we were invited to spend the weekend at the Bartels house in Casablanca. Len and I accepted, of course. We had a great time touring around the city with Johann! On one of our drives a Moroccan flagrantly ran a red light at an intersection. Johann made the comment that traffic lights were “only a suggestion!” The following Monday we were doing our usual morning drive to the plant with Len driving. We came to the stoplight by the big lighthouse (I think there were only two stoplights in El Jadida at the time) Len looked both ways and proceeded to run the light(red). He turned to me and said “traffic lights are only a suggestion.” As he came around the corner there stood a gendarme (policeman) who promptly pulled us over and gave Len a ticket! We quickly learned to obey the traffic rules in Morocco!
I cannot tell you how many rounds of golf we played, but it was a lot! It was our only entertainment so we spent a lot of time on the course at the Royal Golf. One of Len’s favorite sayings, when he would hit a good shot, was “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then!” One of our most memorable moments was when Johann got a hole-in-one on the 4th hole! You could have heard him yelling all the way back to the States!
Len turned out to be a tremendous asset in Morocco. The staff took to him immediately and loved to work with him. He spent a lot of time writing and modifying procedures and processes to conform to how we had done business in Michigan at the Whiting Plant. It was very stressful and difficult working through the language barrier and long seated practices of the existing staff. With Len’s help we were very successful with outstanding performance from the start. I (and I’m sure Len) was most proud of our safety performance. We had no lost time incidents in my tenure in Morocco! (three years)
Pat and I were back in Morocco in 2019. I met with many of the staff. They told me that the things they learned from us are still being applied every day at the plant. Additionally, when a new company recently started a new facility there they tried to hire away the staff from Jorf as they have a reputation for being the best! A compromise was worked out where the Jorf staff helped them (as we had done 20 years before) to get off on the right foot. Len had a lot to be proud of as the plant has continued its fine performance to this day!
After about a year Len had an opportunity back in Michigan so he left Morocco for new adventures. We went our separate ways and seldom had an opportunity to catch up. I do remember one memorable moment in Jackson. I ran into Len in the lobby. We hugged each other and were walking arm in arm across the lobby (a Moroccan habit!) The president of CMS, Dave Jose, saw us and gave us a very strange look indeed!
Len was a fine person and I am sad that we lost touch with each other. One of the drawbacks of our modern society! I could keep up with him on Facebook but its not the same as walking arm in arm and chatting away!
Pat and I offer our deepest condolences to the family. I know that Len has gone to a better place and is at peace. God has blessed and enriched our lives in giving us Len to know and love here on earth.

To Lenny's family
We were so sorry to hear of Lenny's passing. He was a wonderful, cheerful person.
Jim had the pleasure of working with/for Lenny at the CMS plant at Whiting & also for a short stint in Morocco. The 1st thing that Lenny gave to Jim when he arrived in Morocco was a 6 pack of the local beer & a box of something that was needed for Americans to tolerate the water there.
Jim enjoyed being able to work & also to socialize with him & others for his short stay there
Our deepest sympathy,
Jim & Pat Lammers
