Obituary of John Andrew Faunt

John Andrew Faunt, age 83, of Erie passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 25, 2023.  John was born on November 9, 1940, in Luna Pier, Michigan. He was one of four children born to Edward Alarik and Lillian Suzanne (Ashland) Faunt. He graduated from Monroe High School in the class of 1958. After graduation, he volunteered for the U.S. Coast Guard serving for eight years.

On November 18, 1967, he married the former Betty Lehman at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe. John was employed for 32 years through Local 50 Plumbers/Pipefitters Union of Northwest Ohio.  He retired in 2000. The couple were blessed with the birth of two children, John (Jr.) and Carole.

John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially taking them on trips to the beach in Luna Pier or spending the day at the Zoo. His other interests included reading, particularly history and Custer related books. He was an avid watcher of Jeopardy, rarely missing an episode. The family knew not to disturb him when the show was on. He was also interested in family history making two trips to Finland to find and visit relatives there. John also had a fondness for travel with Florida being a favorite destination.

John’s passing was preceded by his parents; two brothers: Edward and Paul; and one sister: Mary Holbrook.

John leaves behind his wife of fifty-six years: Betty of Erie; a son: John (Julie) Faunt of Temperance, a daughter: Carole (Daniel) Hackney of Evansville, IN; and five grandchildren: Jordan Faunt, Justina Faunt, Daniel Hackney, John Hackney, and Owen Hackney.

Friends may gather on Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Merkle Funeral Service, Erie; 9156 Summit Street, Erie, Michigan, 48133 (734) 317-7199. A Memorial Service also at Merkle’s will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday; December 1, 2023. V. Rev. Fr. Daniel Hackney will officiate. A procession to Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in LaSalle will follow.
