My Papa John was just the type of guy who was always there whenever you needed him. He would always check in on me at the best times like he could detect when you were having a bad day. Small things like that will be some of the moments I miss between me and him because he was someone I could rely on for anything. And he really showed me how to cherish small moments like that in life because they can change a person's whole day.
Another thing I found special about Papa John is how he treated every person he talked to. It didn't matter who you were or if you'd even met him before, he would treat every person like you'd been best friends with him for years. He is someone I inspire to be one day in that aspect because he had such a unique outlook on how you should live life positively.
I will forever appreciate everything he did for me and my mother through our hard times. He really felt like our backbone that kept us going through the difficult times when we thought we'd never get out of a slump.
I hope to grow up to be a man just like you one day who can spread a positive outlook on life and be able to make any person's day better when they least expect it.
I know you're watching me from above Papa with Twiggy and Chloe by your side.
I love you, and nobody will ever look as cool as you looked in a police car.

John (Pops, Papa John) has been in my life for over 30 years. He became a Father figure to me during the most impressionable time in my life. Uncharted territory for both of us, for him because he already had 3 boys, and me because I was at a time in my life where having a true definition of a Father figure was not really a reality for me. He was there through it all, from First day Jr High Dance, 4-H competitions, Dating (which did not go so well for those asking me out. Many slammed phones when boys called, he may or may not have used carrying a firearm as a deterrent.), my first job, graduation, marriage, divorce. All the hard stuff. He was a natural. And at times I let on I was annoyed by his over protectiveness, but truthfully, I have never felt so loved and protected in all my life. Even when I announced the birth of my first Son Brayden, his beaming and proudness of me at a time when I was so nervous to tell anyone my news was life changing for me. He was a natural at being a Grandfather as well. I will always cherish the time and care he gave Brayden, even into adulthood texting him always to check in and tell him how happy and proud he is of him. I have never met anyone prouder of his Children and Grandchildren. He really was a true Family man and for that I will be forever thankful. The lessons learned from him I will carry on to my Children for the rest of my life. I won’t be as good as a storyteller as him, or be able to make a lasagna like him, or have a joke just at the right time, take the best candid pictures, but I know he will still look down on me and be proud of me for trying (but totally making fun of my lasagna in the process). From the time he became my Pops he was always taking pictures of everything, even if the people didn’t like their picture taken (he was famous for candid’s). He said It’s the way to see our lives. Show everyone what we have done, where we have been. Always makes for a good story. That it does. He was taking photos like crazy at our annual lake trip and I asked to use his fancy camera so I could take a pic of him (the one and only time he let me touch that dang camera). The photos I have are bittersweet for me because he is not in most of them, because he took them all. Literally capturing my life at a time, I never knew I needed to. I will cherish our time together and these photos forever. Thank you for being the best Pops this Girl needed at the right time. You have taught me more than you know, you have given my Son the best Papa John a Boy could ever have, and I love you. To the Bartko Boys- Thank you for sharing your Father with me. Thank you for being amazing. I will always be grateful. To Vivian, thank you for being the most open-hearted Woman in his life. I appreciate you always supporting John’s relationship with me and my Family. Love, Sarah

I met Coach John Bartko in August of 1988. He showed me how to put on my shoulder pads and the rest of my equipment for my first season of football. From the moment I met him, I felt like we had known each other our whole lives. He was funny, matter of fact, and so easy to talk to. He nicknamed me Slick. He was my coach, mentor, and dear friend. I miss you already Coach, but I know you’re at peace. Having your support and friendship for nearly 35 years has been a blessing. We last spoke on February 9th. and you of course ended the conversation by calling me Slick. I will never forget you and I will always be your Slick. ❤️❤️❤️
Rest in peace Coach.
Love Always,
Tamara Browder Hageage

Rest in peace John my friend. John was one of the best police officers i was associated with. Always there to back me up. Great football player. Had a full tackle football game Oct 1977 with all local law enforcement against the local characters in the county. John shined on defense. Only one touchdown scored in two hours, we won! Goodbye my great friend!

Hello Robert. This is Steve Mezardjian. My mother was one of John's cousins. I don't know if you remember me, but I worked for Highland Appliance back in the early Eighties. You would stop in to our store and you and I would speak at length. My email is steviemez@icloud.com if you would like to catch up. A lot of water under the bridge since then.
