A Prayer that a friend sent to me yesterday:Lord, I come to you know for my friend. I come to you to ask that you provide them strength and comfort in this time of deep need. Their hurt and grief run so deep. I feel so much pain for them, but I can only imagine how hard this time must be for them. I pray that you help them maintain their faith in you during this difficult time. I know you can be our greatest shoulder, but I also ask that you remain their biggest provider. It is a time when daily life can be so burdensome. Please provide patience from others as they work through their grief. Surround them with understanding so that they can work through all the emotions this loss brought up. In this time when so many things get lost - bills need to be paid, homework needs to be done, etc. - allow those around them to help keep regular life on track. And Lord, allow me to be a comfort to my friend. Help me be what they need during this time. Provide me with the comforting words, the kindness in my heart, the patience to allow the grief to take it's course. Let me be part of your light and comfort during this time. I pray these things in your holy name. Amen.

As I read these words, I am brought to tears. I thank you all for sharing your hearts on here, for opening up and letting us know how great of a man our father really was. You see, we knew him for so many things. We knew he helped people. We knew he loved us. But we didn't know how much. We did not know the extent. I am beyond proud of my father. Although our hearts are broken and we miss him every minute, we find peace in your words and love for our father. Please keep the thoughts, memories and prayers pouring in. God bless you all!

Ray was a man who spoke though his actions. He choose his words carefully pausing frequently. A man of great struggle thru his early years and great triumph in his later years. I knew him the last 7 years and my life is forever changed for the better as a result of his friendship. His faith was unwavering, his love for his family was unquestionable. It's no surprise to me that many of us were very close to him but never knew just how close he was to other people. You see Ray was a trusted servant to his cause. He was no leader and wouldn't accept credit for anything but gave everything he had. Words that best define him are. Integrity, humility, As I stand here now I can't imagine ever having a friend that will mean as much as Ray does to me now. I cherish every minute I ever spent with him. Patti, Ray JR, Nikki, Matt, your husband and father has great Man the hardship you endured is not in vein. You see ray helped in changing my family showing me by example how to live a life that even God would be proud of and it wasn't just me as you know and are now learning he affected a lot of men women and families which are now much better off as a result of his unwavering love and support. Many have referred to him as a walking angle. Ray would want us to use this time to ask ourselves a few simple questions. Could we do more, be more, give more. His suggestion to us at this time is also simple. Suit up, show up, and help someone else, keep it simple one day at a time. Take credit for nothing and give everything you have. The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.

My sincere condolences to Ray Van's family; how blessed you are, along with the friends he was closest to. Thank you for putting up with us, allowing Ray the freedom to help us. For a lot of Ray's friends, we were fellows in the same ship. I knew just enough of him to know that there were things about him that I wanted. It's funny... he was always around like a guardian angel, and reflecting upon his endearing traits, more has rubbed off than I ever realized before. It has dawned on me this week, that in my five and a half years here, Ray stands out as the one I have seen the most at meetings, beginning with Mondays in Monroe. I don't know why I never realized that before. I guess it didn't matter before, but moving forward it does, as the message Ray Van carried must go on. Ray loved our Literature, and taught others to love it too in book studies; that it contained the solution in accepting, surrendering, and making changes. This man helped me, and many others who wanted help, and he did that by being a good example of living the spiritual principles of the program. He did these things humbly and with kindness. I can't recall a time when he was arrogant, controversial, or rude. He displayed inner peace. We all loved Ray Van, and it wasn't necessary to know all about his life, in order to appreciate him as a sign of God's grace in the fellowship. Our program is called a WE PROGRAM; without meaning to loaners, but with God and others, we get through our illness a day at-a-time. Maybe some day, by applying our 12 Steps to the best of our ability, like Ray, we will reach the point at which we are at peace with ourselves, with others and with God. Then we'll too have the privilege of dying sober. Thanks for being there Ray; we'll always be there for you.

It is with a heavy heart I say rest in peace Ray Van, will always remembers his soft spoken way. All the AA meeting I saw him at, and the ones his words would be carried to, and never to be forgotten. We lose great souls in AA all the time but they are never out of our soul, just reminding us to carry the message to whom may come along next. . Robert Morison BYOB S. Rockwood…

To, Patti, Ray, Nikki, & Matt My heart aches with you over the passing of you husband and Father.. Ray was the closet friend in this world that I ever had. I can't recall a time when he ever argued or disagreed about anything. He was always there for me and me for him. He helped so many poeple during their time of darkness. He was a man that lived by his actions more than his words. He had a way about him that simply inspired you to want to be more like him. He was faithful in his service to others, true in his love for his family, and honest with everyone he touched. To loose someone like this is not easy but like many others I'm so much better off for having known and had him in my life. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
