Ruth Ellen Brost was born in Raisinville Township, Michigan on November 9, 1919. She was one of two children born from the union of the late Clarence Brost and the late Hazel M. (Wener) Brost. She attended a one room schoolhouse, Paper Mill School on North Custer. During World War II, Ruth Ellen supported the war effort with employment at Monroe Auto Equipment.
She married the love of her life, George Edward Knight on April 12, 1941 in Monroe. From this union would come the birth of two children. Ruth Ellen had the difficult task of being a farmer's wife. She often would sell eggs from a roadside stand and milk the cows. She loved working outside, gardening, planting flowers, and even mowing her lawn by hand into her late 80's.
For thirteen year Ruth Ellen worked for Ida Public Schools as a custodian retiring in 1991. After retirement she took many opportunities to travel, often taking bus trips with the Frenchtown Senior Citizens. Her travels took her from the snow train in Canada to Branson, Missouri.
Ruth Ellen cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great cook and baker. She was a member of the Monroe County Historical Society and a past 4H Community Leader. Ruth Ellen was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Monroe.
Ruth Ellen Knight, age 94 of Monroe, passed away at home on Friday, November 29, 2013. n addition to her parents her passing was preceded in 1974 by her husband: George; and a brother: Delvin Brost.
To cherish her memory, she leaves a daughter: Dawn (Marvin) Hicks Jr. of Monroe; a son: Dennis (Cynthia) Knight of Lenawee County; five grandchildren: CoraLee (Brandon) Pasko, Lucas Hicks, Amy, Dennis, and Danny Knight; and two great grandchildren: Emma Rose Pasko, Carson Pasko and one on the way: Evelyn Pasko.
Friends may gather from 11:00am-2:00pm on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will follow at 2:00pm with Pastor Katie Waggoner of First United Methodist Church officiating. Private burial will take place on Monday, December 2, 2013 at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle.
