Hilaria Hernandez was born in Colon, Republic of Panama on December 3, 1929. She was one of thirteen children from the union of the late Camilo Abrego and the late Tomasa (Nino) Abrego. Hilaria attended school receiving her diploma in Colon, Panama.
Hilaria married the love of her life, Balbino Hernandez, in 1969 at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Colon, Panama. After Balbino's passing in 1987, Hilaria moved to the United States to be close to her family. As a devout Catholic, Hilaria received her spiritual nourishment at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe where she was active with the migrant ministry.
Hilaria was known to be very kind and helpful. She was always there to support her children and assisted in raising her grandchildren. Hilaria was a wonderful cook and hosted many family events. She enjoyed dancing, listening to music, and playing Bingo with her friends.
Hilaria Hernandez, age 83 of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly at 10:22am on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. In addition to her parents, her passing was preceded by her loving husband: Balbino Hernandez; nine sisters and three brothers.
To cherish her memory, Hilaria leaves behind three daughters: Mirta (Marcus) VanEtten of Detroit, Luz (Jorge) Rivera of Monroe, and Gloria Hernandez of Belleville; two sons: Alcides (Adis) Hernandez of New York and Victor Hernandez of Panama; three sisters: Juana Duran, Flavia DeLeon, and Cruz Abrego; and fourteen grandchildren: Dwayne, Gisselle, Ciara, Cenit, Alana, Alcides Jr., Almilcar, Anette, Sue, Sol, Gianelle, Corine, Gian, Jonathan.
A private gathering was held for her family and a crematory committal was appropriated through Southern Michigan Services, Livonia, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held on October 22, 2013 at 11:00am, in Colon, Panama where she will be laid to rest.
