Obituary of Arnold Fortner

Arnold C. Fortner was born in Monroe on March 13, 1939. He was the son of the late Major and Montana (Sweat) Fortner. Arnold graduated from Monroe High with the Class of 1957. He then served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army from 1958-1961. Arnold married the love of his life, the former Phyllis Ridner, on May 19, 1963. From this union would come the birth of five children. Arnold supported his family working on the assembly line at the Chrysler Trenton Engine Plant. He retired after thirty years of service. Arnold received his spiritual nourishment at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post, as well as the Fraternal Order of Eagles both of Monroe. Arnold was a loving husband and a great father. Later in life he experienced the joy of grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his eight and also the four great-grandchildren. He was patiently waiting for the arrival of any additional two great-grandchildren in 2014. Arnold also enjoyed gardening, playing the guitar, playing card games, and cooking his famous chicken and dumplings. Arnold Clarence Fortner, age 74 of Monroe was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 5, 2013. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by two beloved sons: Robert and Gary Fortner; and two sisters: Joyce Valentine and Donna Moody. To cherish his memory, Arnold leaves a loving wife of fifty years: Phyllis; three daughters: Connie (Bill) Giznsky, Vickie (Gary) Werner, and Kimberly Fortner; a daughter-in-law: Jennifer Fortner-Fischer (Matt); eight grandchildren: Rachel Giznsky, Melissa Giznsky, William (Chelsey) Giznsky III, Timothy (Cassie) Werner, Daniel (Karla) Werner, Joey Fortner, Aleah Fortner-Fischer, Megan Fortner-Fischer; and four great-grandchildren: Lucas and Kaelah Burns and Madison and Bella Giznsky. Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm, Monday, October 7, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070 (formerly known as Bennett Funeral Services). He will lie in state from 12:00pm until a Celebration of His Life at 1:00pm, Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, 14260 South Dixie Highway. Procession will follow to Roselawn where graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138. Memorials for those who desire are suggested to Monroe Missionary Baptist Church.
