Walter E. Gerber, age 84, of Petersburg passed away early Tuesday morning at Medilodge in Monroe following a long illness. He was born in Tipton, Michigan March 20, 1930 the son of Frederick C. and Lillie M. (DeWitt) Gerber. He married Barbara A. Hiser May 24, 1952 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Petersburg. He graduated from Summerfield Petersburg High School in 1948. He was active in football, basketball and baseball. He joined the US Army from 1951 to 1953 serving as a Cpl. He then worked at Revco Industries in Petersburg for 18 years and then went to work at the Ford Motor Company Saline Plant. He retired from Ford Motor Co in 1994. He is a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, was a long time fireman of the Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of Local # 892 and bowled on several area leagues. Survivors include his wife Barbara; his son Thomas (Pamela) Gerber of Clinton; daughter Patti(John) Gruden of Dundee; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, brother James (Donna) Gerber of Petersburg. He was preceded in death by parents a brother Clayton; brother and sister in law Lester and Ruth (Hiser) Dohm. Friends may call Friday from 1 – 8 P.M. at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156) He will lie in state Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 10 A.M. until funeral services at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Petersburg. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Flory. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Petersburg. Memorials may be made to the Summerfield Schools Booster Club.
