Obituary of Charles G. Kanitz

Charles G. (Chuck) Kanitz, age 90 of Dundee, Michigan, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 8, 2011 at his home under the care of his wife and family and hospice. He was born in Augusta Township, Michigan on December 7, 1920, the son of Charles and Viola (Smith) Kanitz. He grew up on the family farm and valued an education and graduated from Milan High School in 1941. Following his graduation he joined the United States Army and served as a Private First Class in Co D., 29th Ordinance Training Battalion. He had served on the London Township board as a trustee, was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and played on its Dartball League. He also loved to fish and hunt. He married Joan Chase on April 28, 1945. She passed away January 10, 1974. He then married Madalyn J.(Midge) Dunmore February 8, 1975 at St. John Lutheran by then Pastor Paul Horn. He was a lifelong farmer but also had worked in the maintenance department of the University of Michigan retiring in 1983. His survivors include his wife, three daughters Carol (Roger) Chiolino of Harrison, Michigan, Charlene (Ken) Stough of Tucson, Arizona, Claire (Wade) Jennings of Milan; two sons Mark (Rhonda) Brammer of Lambertville and Charlie Kanitz; a brother William (Alene) Kanitz of Milan; grandchildren Robert Masserant, Carrie Roberts, Timothy Stough, Jon Stough, Jessica Pellman, Aaron Saxton, Christopher Saxton, Timothy Saxton, Justin Brammer, Chad Brammer and Amanda Younge; fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a son Matthew Saxton and a brother Joseph Kanitz. Friends may call on Wednesday from 1 to 9 P.M. at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee, 734-529-3156. He will lie in state on Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. until services at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church, 460 Riley Street in Dundee. Officiating will be Rev. Annette Griffin. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dundee with military graveside services conducted by the Dundee Veterans Group. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Church in his memory.
