Joe, was one of my regular customers. I'm definitely going to miss his jokes but most of all his kindness. He's definitely in a better place watching over everyone. Thank you joe for all the hard times you gave me at work but to just leave a smile on my face. Thank you. I will miss you!

Brother Joe, I will not be able to stand up and tell my story, because my heart is broke. And I don't even know how I will be able to make the day, you were my big brother that I looked up to. In our younger years, I was blessed when you wanted to play Johnny's with me, and of course I would play army men with you. As we got older, I got to hang out with your friends ( the only girl) in the bunch, playing cops and robbers. As we grew older, you were the one that bought my friends and I, our GIQ's . I had the cool brother, that in the winter would take my friends and I around the neighborhood tailgating on our sleds, and would let us go with him up and down telegraph in his cool T Bird. As we grew older, and had family's, we would spend our summers at halfmoon lake Boating, and in the winter snowmobiling in the woods behind your house. Then we grew older and went in different directions for a time, but you chose to came back in our life's, and it was to short, and we had PLANS for the future, and we were all going to grow old together. You will be so missed by so many people you have touched. And I am proud to call you my Big Brother.

"Uncle Joe"...that is how my siblings and I knew Joe Messina. He was not our fleshly uncle, but, he was the closest thing to family we had. When my mother married my father and came to America from Korea, Uncle Joe and Aunt Debbie welcomed her into their arms, their lives, and, most significantly, into their hearts. As a child, I knew that Uncle Joe was "family by choice", meaning that my mom and dad chose him and he chose us. My childhood memories are full of time spent at my "cousins'" huge house watching movies, swimming in their pool, snow-mobiling, riding in the big van, and watching Uncle Joe waterski. I remember many late nights hearing our parents roar with laughter while they played Pinochle. Time spent at Uncle Joe's was always fun. Uncle Joe enjoyed giving people nicknames and he gave a unique one to my mom based on her inability to grasp the game of Pinochle. It seems that she took risks while playing that a more seasoned player would never attempt...thus, my uncle named her "Kamikaze Jeannie". It was a loving designation that my mom wore proudly whenever Uncle Joe and Aunt Debbie invited them over for a game. It still brings a smile to her face when she remembers those fun, late-night card games. The Phillips and Messina families were really one big happy, crazy family. We kids knew that the love shared by our parents was special. Friends like that come along once in a lifetime and we are so grateful for the love Uncle Joe shared with us. My mom wants everyone to know that Joe Messina had "a heart as good as gold". He was one of the kindest, most generous and open-hearted people we have ever known. He was a good friend who loved to have fun and good laughs. Joe Messina was a man who, no matter what, treated us like family, loved us as though we were family, and leaves us with memories that we will cherish forever. Until we meet again, Uncle Joe... Joe was born in 1955 to Delores and Joseph Messina. The middle child to older sister Michelle and younger sister Dawn. Joe grew up in Livonia MI and graduated with honors from Bentley High School, he also played Varsity Football. After high school he joined his father in the family concrete business. In 1977 he married Debra Kelsey and her daughter Stephanie and then was blessed with three more beautiful children Shelby, Joe and Loren. He not only leaves behind 4 nieces and nephews who will dearly miss him and his chocolate licorice he also leaves behind 4 beautiful grandchildren who will never get to know just what a truly good man he was and what a big heart he had.
