Obituary of Orville L. Garst
Orville Lewis Garst (Uncle Buck) , age 85 of Petersburg died Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Toledo Hospital after a long illness. He was born March 18, 1927 in Waldron, Michigan, the son of Harvey F, and Mary Etta (Talley) Garst. He married the former Dorothy Mae Steinbrecher on April 28, 1951. He had served in the US Navy from 1944 until late 1945 aboard the Destroyer USS Pittsburgh and Carrier USS Vella Gulf. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee where he was also baptized by the Rev. Fred Cesler and was also confirmed there. He was a 50 year member of the Redford-Metropolitan Free and Accepted Masons Lodge # 152 in Redford, Michigan. He was employed for over 15 years at Owens-Illinois, a glass company in Toledo, Ohio. He left there to pursue the growth of the Garst L.P. Gas Co. Inc.. He and Dorothy started the Garst L.P. Gas Company, Inc. in Petersburg in 1959 and was active until retiring in 1995. He was an avid hunter when he was young; enjoyed the outdoors and fishing on his boat on Lake Erie and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughter Rebecca Garst of Dundee; sons Rodney (Ann), Roger (Jackie), Richard (Dana) and Ron (Julie) all of Petersburg; grandchildren Heather Scott (Mike), Kendall, Damien, Hannah, Adison, Samantha and Kenna; great-grandchildren Jake, Lexi and RaeLynn; and sister Elba Cortez of Livonia, Michigan. He was preceded in death by brothers Walter and Donald Garst and sisters Alice Miller and Iva Fern Maysack. Friends may call on Tuesday from 1 – 9 P.M. at Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156 ). He will lie in state on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 10 A.M. until service at 11:00 A.M at St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee. Officiating will be Rev. Michael Konow, pastor of the church. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Petersburg. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Summerfield Fire Department or to any charity of the donor’s choice.,
