Obituary of Doris M. Pickens

Doris Marie (Lafler) Pickens, age 98, of Dundee, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor. She was born in Dundee Township March 11, 1913 the only daughter of Byron L. and Edith (Braunlich) Lafler. She married Ernest F. Pickens October 31, 1936 in Ida, Michigan. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1986. He preceded her in death March 7, 1988. Doris was a 1931 graduate of Milan High School and had also attended Detroit Business College. She lived on a farm in Azalia for many years until moving to Dundee in 1989. A homemaker all her life, she was happiest in her kitchen or garden and was an excellent cook. She also loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan especially the University of Michigan, the Detroit Tigers and her grandchildren’s athletics. Doris is survived by her children, Theresa Wells of Delaware, Ohio, Byron (Joyce Ann) Pickens of Dundee, Joyce (Rudy) Studnicka of Mancelona, Michigan and Mary Rehberg of Dundee. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her son and daughter in law Franklin and Patricia Pickens, and sons –in –law Dick Wells and Dennis Rehberg. Friends may call on Monday from 1 – 8 P.M. at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156) Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Officiating will be Rev. Jack Lemon. Burial will be in Azalia Cemetery in Azalia. Memorials may be made to Arbor Hospice, Dundee Senior Citizens of to the family..
