Vincent Paul Schieda
April 28, 1928 - August 25, 2012
Vincent Paul Schieda was born in Dearborn, Michigan on April 28, 1928. He was the son of the late Paul Schieda and the late Hilda (Natzman) Schieda. Vince served his country honorably. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 13, and then served enlistments with the United States Navy, and Army Airborne.
Vince married, the former Sarah Frances Mercer on January 4, 1946 in Ohio. Together the couple raised five children. For many years, Vince supported his family in the construction industry. He was the owner of Standard General in Dearborn Heights. His company performed much municipal work over the year for the City of Dearborn. Although he never officially retired, Vince slowed down after his wife's passing in 2007.
Vince loved the company of his family and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and spoiling them. He shared much with the grandchildren including tall tales, wrestling, camping Up North, or playing sports.
Vince had a passion for fishing. He loved to play games of chance and visiting the casino and playing the lottery were favorite pastimes. Vince had a gentle heart like a child and was very caring and compassionate. He was a very hard worker always taking on new tasks with one of his past adventures being raising a baby alligator.
Vincent Paul Schieda, age 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 25, 2012. In addition to his parents; and his beloved wife: Sarah; his passing was preceded by two sisters: Yolanda Kizer and Pauline Murray; two brothers: Paul Schieda and Ronald Schieda; one-son in-law: Richard Cross; and one grandson: Vincent Martyn.
He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters: Kay (Cecil) Smith of Fayetteville, NC, Sandy Cross of Carleton, and Vickie (Gary) Banovetz of Northville; two sons: Ronald (Susie) Merritt of Fayetteville, NC, Jackie (Carol) Merritt of Fayetteville, NC; one son-in-law: Michael Martyn of Inkster; one sister: Theresa Pettitt of Lincoln Park; nine grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and also many nieces and nephews.
Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm, Monday, August 27, 2012 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 also at Merkle's. Father James Smalarz pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will officiate. Members of Monroe VFW Post 1138 will provide military honors. Cremation will follow and his inurnment will take place at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights.
