John and I were best buddies as kids growing up in Monroe. He lived on Maple and I lived on Michigan Ave. I remember John fondly. He had a great collection of Matchbox toys which he'd gladly share since I only had one! Typical boys, we'd play "Army". (The TV show "Combat" was all the rage then so we'd live those fantasies “on patrol” along the Mason Run creek). A tinkerer even then, he'd create his "contraptions" from junk we found on our adventures. We'd sneak a peek at his dad's beloved Studebaker in the garage (careful not to touch it!). John's mom made the world's best banana bread – never had better to this day. I broke my arm riding on John’s shoulders. He couldn’t manage my weight and we fell against the garage. He should have never let chubby little Dave up on his shoulders, but hey, that’s what best buddies do, right? Sadly, I moved away and John and I lost touch, but I always remembered a good friend, a happy and kind kid, generous and polite. Of my childhood friends, he was a favorite of my mom’s (Alice Hopson) as well. Farewell brother-man.
