Obituary of Fredrick Harvey Lizyness

Fredrick Harvey Lizyness was born on November 19, 1940 in Carleton, Michigan. He is one of six children born from the union of the late Philip and Rose (Strimpel) Lizyness. Fred attended Monroe High School and soon after, he enlisted into the United States Navy, Fred served his country honorably until he was discharged in September of 1963. During his tour on duty, he served as Commissary Man aboard a Tank Landing Ship, the U.S.S Lorain County, which participated in both the Vietnam Conflict and Cuban Crisis era. After his discharge, Fred returned to his hometown of Monroe before moving to Lake Orion in 1994. He worked as a truck driver for over 25 years for Shatterproof Glass, Faygo and Barb Griffith. Later he managed Rustic Cabins in Lake Orion before finally retiring in November of 2015. Fred was a member of VFW Post 3943 in Newport, serving as commander for one year and four years as trustee, the American Legion Charlton/Polan Post 233 serving on the Executive Board. He was Veteran of the Year in 2010 and honored in Lake Orion’s Memorial Day Parade. Fredrick Harvey Lizyness, age 76 of Lake Orion passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017 at his home in Lake Orion. In addition to his parents, his passing is preceded by: a brother: Albert Lizyness; a sister: Gertrude Swan; and his beloved cat: Spot. To cherish his memory, Fredrick leaves his beloved children: Aida Lizyness of Puerto Rico, Gerald W. Lizyness of Monroe, Douglas Lizyness of Lake Orion, Tracy Lizyness of Monroe and Nicole Lizyness of Monroe; his siblings: Charles (Dorothy) Lizyness of Louisiana, Thomas (Heidi) Lizyness of Illinois, and Mary Hill of Virginia; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and close friends: John Luchkovicz, Steve Bowman and Joe Vanmeter. Friends may gather from 3:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe, 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe (734)384-5185. A Celebration of his Life will follow on Friday March 24, 2017 at 11:00am also at Merkle Funeral Service. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle, Michigan, where graveside services will be held under the auspices of the Monroe VFW post 1138.
