Mary Margaret McElligott, was born on January 18, 1949 in Paoli, Indiana. She was the only daughter born from the union of the late Michael L. McElligott and the late Elizabeth (Leake) McElligott.
Mary Martin met a handsome man named, Ted W. Mayes. She always said that fate interceded and sent him her way. They were married on September 5, 1970 in Erie, Michigan. Ted and Mary enjoyed more than 36 years of marriage together. From 1985 until Ted's passing on April 2, 2007 she assisted him with the Operation of Star Construction. She earned her cosmetology license from Michigan College of Beauty and worked for Fiesta Hair and Nail. Mary worked for several years for Sodexo Foods at Monroe High School.
Mary's beloved family includes two sons: Brandon C. Mayes of Erie, Michigan and Chad Herzog; two daughters: Charlene (Scott) Deszell of Dickson, Tennessee and Cinnamon (Jerrod) Weikum of Monroe; two brothers: Pat McElligott of Monroe and John (Tammy) McElligott of Berrien Springs, Michigan; and five wonderful grandchildren: Christopher and Erica Deszell, Dakota and Rio Weikum, and Kennedy Mayes.
Mary Margaret Mayes, age 60, passed away at 6:15am, Sunday morning, June 7, 2009 at her Erie home. She had been under the care of her family and Heartland Hospice and Homecare. In addition to her parents and her beloved husband Ted Sr.; her passing was preceded by her first born son, Ted Wesley Mayes II "The Grizz".
Friends may gather from 1:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street; (734) 384-5185. Friends may also gather at the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church from 10:00am until a Celebration of Her Life at 11:00am, Wednesday, June 10, 2009. The Rev. Roy Southerland pastor of the church will officiate. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.
