Mary Dolores York was born in Richland, Virginia on May 3, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Henry Jewell and Bertha (Prewitt) Jewell. Mary married the late William York in Danville, on February 9, 1947.
Mary supported her family as a Nurse Aid at the Monroe County Health Department for over 30 years retiring in 1988. In her younger years, Mary enjoyed spending time with the elderly and her passion for them continued as a home health care provider in addition to her employment.
Mary was a very loving mother and her life revolved around her grandchildren. She loved to get together with family to play cards, bingo or dance.
Mary was an avid antique collector always looking for a great deal at garage sales and flea markets. She was a wonderful cook and liked to entertain at family gatherings. In her quiet time, Mary spent time with her Lord reading her bible.
Mary Dolores York, age 85, of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Medilodge of Monroe. In addition to her parents her passing was preceded by her loving husband of fifty-five years: William York; son: Steve York; sisters: Etter Nelson, Mable White, Daisy Walters and Beulah Hitch; brothers: Dewey Jewell, Mack Jewell, H.C. Jewell, Joe Jewell, Bret Jewell Kemper, Jewell, and Harold Jewell.
To cherish her memory she leaves her five children: John (Sandy) Jewell of Monroe, Patricia (Bob) Carter of Monroe, Barbara (Charlie) Budd of Monroe, Ricky (Georgia) York of Newport and Teresa (Rusty) Crawford of Monroe; a great- granddaughter: Jenah Trotter; a daughter in law: Carol York of Maybee; a sister: Gay (Jim) Smith of Virginia; a brother: Curt (Jerri) Jewell of Iron Mountain; twenty-two grandchildren: Tammy (Eric) Everson, Denise Jewell, Bobby (Jennifer) Carter, Bradley (Dawn) Carter, Lucy (Chad) Becker, Cynthia Trotter, Michael (Michelle) Trotter, Benjamin (Sara) Budd, Maranda Budd, Troy York, Molly (Jason) Hill, Billy Lea (Ricky) Fountain, Richard (Ashley) Crawford, Danielle (Nick) McCoy, Timothy Crawford, Jacob Crawford, Angie Crawford, Scott Crawford, Jill York, Lori (Mario) Panza, Laura (Glen) Black and Dallas (Lynette) Powers; forty- eight great grandchildren; and nineteen great-great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 3:00pm until 8:00pm, Friday, September 26, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070. A Celebration of Her Life will take place at 9:30am on Saturday, September 27, 2014 also at Merkle's with Pastor Fred Swank officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park for burial.
