Obituary of Gladys Laverne Williams

Gladys Laverne Hughes Williams, 82, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Gladys was born on May 20, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Hudson Hughes and Lollie Ophelia Broome Hughes Sr. She attended Warren G. Harding High School. Gladys was retired from General Electric. She enjoyed fishing and gardening in her spare time. To cherish her memory she leaves a granddaughter, Ophelia L. Williams; and a host of friends and family. Gladys' passing was preceded by her parents; a daughter, Shenita L. Williams on March 7, 2015; two sisters, Dearie Ophelia and Ophelia "Little Sis"; four brothers, Charles Hughes, Williams Hughes, Robert Hughes and Hudson Hughes Jr.; and one special friend, William Hooks Sr. Friends may gather 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.18, 2017, at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Mich.,734- 241-7070. A Homegoing celebration will follow at 1p.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Allen Overton, pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church officiating.
