Marilyn and Claudia, Your dad was a loving and caring person as well as a great coach. He had the patience to put up with all of us girls and I know at times we drove him crazy. He took all that with great stride and kept pushing us to do well. I will cherish all of the fond memories and will always be thankful he shared his time with us. God bless you and your family. Love Bobbie

Dear Marilyn, Iam sorry about your dad, I don't quite know what to say except thanks for sharing him with us. He made a huge difference in my life and I am forever grateful for knowing him. The lessons I learned I use every day and I will miss being called brat. Remember when we would do something wrong and he would look up and say Lord, now he's looking down and saying it. God bless you and your family, Love Lori

One of my favorite (and earliest) memories of Gr'pa Merk was when I was probably around 8 years old and he was teaching me euchre. Obviously the rules are quite tricky for beginners let alone a young one like myself - but I adored and trusted him; and honestly the thought of learning an adult card game such as this was great enough in itself. Then Gr'pa sees I'm getting the hang of it, winning a couple hands, and increasingly getting more enthusiastic - so he says "Ok, how about we play a penny a trick...make it interesting." At the thought of winning what probably amounted to 50 cents, at best a dollar, I ran upstairs and got all my pennies with green in my eyes. To make a long story short Gr'pa bled me dry...I didn't win one hand. And I thought, well, at least he's my Gr'pa and obviously he's going to give me my pennies and probably some of his too.
No. That man kept every single penny, and I think I must have had disbelief and tears in my eyes because at the time that was probably all of my money. Yet, it did not matter, this was life and there was nothing strange about this encounter. Of course it took awhile for me to overcome this incident, but pretty quickly we were playing for pennies all the time. Until I grew up and stopped playing for any sort of money whatsoever. In fact, I credit him with how much I dislike gambling, and even when I went to Vegas and couldn't bet a dime.
Luckily I got to tell him this story a few days ago, and he laughed and smiled quite big. I don't know if he remembered it but he sure didn't seemed surprised at the story. A great man that taught me a lot, and at the least - early lessons on the dangers of gambling.
Thank you for everyone who spent time with him and treasured him as much as I did. Peace and Love.

During this difficult time we would like to extend our most heartfelt sympathies. If you need a friend to help you through this, you know who to call. We had many years of fun together. Poppa Merk called me one of his "brats" - a term of endearment to him. Although we have not been close physically for many years, we always stayed in touch with a call or a card and we always spent time together when Theron and I visited Michigan. He is part of our family and will always be thought of with a smile. Love, Theron and Skeeter
