Mary Lue Lowe was born in Williamson, West Virginia on February 4, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Opal (Varney) Lowe. Mary Lue married James Thompson in Williamson, Kentucky on December 23, 1953. The couple would make their home in Monroe in 1954 and together shared in the birth of four children. Mary Lue worked in the kitchen and as a cook for several local restaurants including the Little Dixie and Monroe Diner. It was said that she was instrumental in bringing Biscuits and Gravy and Chicken and Dumplings to local restaurants. Mary Lue also was employed in housekeeping for Mercy Memorial Hospital for some time. She was well known for her generosity to others, and her strong willed confidence. She did things her own way and could be counted on to share her great sense of humor with a prank. Mary Lue loved time spent with family, listening to her husband play his harmonica and cherished her grandchildren more than anything. She had deep worry and concern for her family. For the past few years, Mary Lue had been a resident of Fountainview of Monroe where she received superb care. Mary Lue Thompson, age 84 passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
