Bettie Lou May was born in Eagan, Tennessee on August 24, 1944. She was one of eight children born from the union of the late Albert and the late Roxie (Parrot) Davis. Bettie was married to Dennis May Sr. and from this union came the birth of five children. Bettie supported her family around the home for many years while her children were young and needed cared for. Later, she took a route delivering newspapers for the Monroe Evening News and worked several years as a housekeeper at the Frenchtown Nursing Center. Bettie loved her family dearly. She enjoyed spending time with her children and loved the fact that she had grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bettie was a big music fan, especially of country music. She enjoyed taking a day to go off and shop. Bettie loved to travel and never missed an opportunity to take a road trip. She was a fantastic cook and loved to can her own food. Bettie Lou May, age 72, of Newport passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 with her loving family by her side. In addition to her parents, Bettie was preceded by two sisters: Hazel Hinkle and Polly Holeman; four brothers: Everett Davis, LC Davis, Kenneth Davis and JB Davis; and also Dennis May Sr. in 2004. To cherish her memory, Bettie leaves behind her children: Teresa Campbell of Monroe, Sandra (Damon) Barnes of Carelton, Dennis May Jr of Canton, Cheryl (Gary) VanEeckhoutte of Newport and Michelle Wagner of Southgate; sister: Pauline Maxwell; twelve grandchildren: Nicole Campbell, Nicholas Campbell, Robert (Nicole) Barnes, Damon Barnes II, Amanda (Andrew) Worley, Travis (Jessica) VanEeckhoutte, Dennis “DJ” May, Jake May, Janeen Dusseau, Jordan McKee, Jillian Dusseau and Courtney Wagner; and twelve great grandchildren. Friends may gather on Friday, September 16, 2016 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe 2442 North Monroe Street Monroe, MI (734)384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will follow at 2:00pm also at Merkle’s with Reverend Joseph Byrd of Stewart Road Church of God, officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.
