Thomas Herbert Liedel

Thomas H. Liedel passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at home in Scofield surrounded by his loving family. Friends may gather at Merkle Funeral Service on Saturday, September 25 from 1-8:00pm with Military services under the auspices of Maybee VFW Post 4361 and Carleton VFW Post 4093. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, September 29 at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church on Heiss.
Tom was born December 26, 1922 to Bernard J. and Nellie R. (Hitchingham) Liedel. He married the former Ruth Kabel on June 21, 1942. She preceded him in death October 29, 2005.
Tom served in the Army during World War II from 1943-1946 in Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge along with the Victory Medal, American Theater, European African, and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons with one Bronze Battle Star. He was a life member of VFW Post 4361, and held various posts including the current Chaplain.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church holding several offices including Treasurer. For the past 50 years he was Secretary/Treasurer of Gethsemane Cemetery Association. Tom showed his commitment to his neighbors and his friends by his volunteer service. He was a former member of the Exeter Township Historical Society, served on the township Board of Review, and elected township Supervisor in 1988. He was proud to have issued the first Township Newsletter which has been ongoing. After serving one term as supervisor, he became the Tax Assessor from 1988 to 2001, and was honored by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners with various awards and citations.
In addition to his wife Ruth, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Daniel (Garnet), Leo (Helen), Eugene (Ruth) and Charles (Loretta).
He is survived by son: Herbert (Patricia) of Maybee; daughters: Nadine (Donald) Maurer of Carleton, and Valerie (Rodney) Maier of Maybee; sisters: Bernadine Brooks of California, Rosemary Schatzka of Monroe, Frances (Richard) Loeffler of Toledo, and Grace (Bruce) Clark of Manchester; brothers: Norman (Bea) and Richard Liedel of Monroe; eight grandchildren: Joyce (Donald) Kennedy, Lori (Jeff) Pete, Dawn (Gregg) Updike, Susan (Brian) Nelson, Josh (Michelle) Maier, nineteen grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing at his cottage in Canada Creek ranch. Tom's greatest contributions were to his family showering them with unabashed love and affection.
Memorials may be made to Mercy Memorial Hospice or Gethsemane Cemetery.
