George Bishop Victor Riggs
October 26, 1942-September 26, 2007
George Riggs, age 64, went to be with his Lord at 9:25am, Wednesday, September 26, 2007.
Friends may gather from 1-8pm, Friday, September 28, 2007 at the Merkle Funeral Home and at the LaSalle Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday from 10:00am until the funeral service at 1:00pm. The Rev. Danny Riggs, the Rev. Terry Braden, and Howard Roberts, will co-officiate. Graveside services will be under the auspices of VFW Post 1138, Monroe at LaSalle Township Cemetery.
George was born October 26, 1942 in Campbell County, Tennessee. He was the son of George and Mildred (Dupuy) Riggs. George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict.
He married his best friend and soul mate Mabel Roberts on August 13, 1966 also in Campbell County. George worked as a Machine Operator for the GM Powertrain Plant in Toledo for 31 years retiring in 2000. Since George's "retirement" he has worked for MCOP in the transportation department. He especially loved the opportunity to take folks to their doctor appointments.
George was an avid NASCAR fan. Mr. Riggs was a proud member of the National Rifle Association, and enjoyed collecting guns and attending guns shows, he loved to cook and can; recently he had canned green beans and tomatoes for his daughter, Trisha. Fishing was another passion and George and his grandson, Landen would visit Sterling State Park for a catch. George was even a carpenter and spent many hours assembling birdhouses.
George and Mabel have attended the LaSalle Missionary Baptist Church. For many years George served as a Deacon for his church. Since he became ordained, George, has served in the capacity of Assistant Pastor.
He is survived by his wife Mabel of LaSalle, his mother: Mildred Riggs of Oakridge, TN; four children: Trisha (Gerad) Clawson of LaSalle, Brad (NiNi) Riggs of Monroe, Brent and Dynah Riggs both of LaSalle; three foster children: Garry and Larry Smith of Erie, and Jason Blanchette of Toledo; a brother: James (Linda) Riggs of Toledo; a sister: Nancy (Don) Overbay of Powell, TN; grandchildren: Landen and Presley Riggs, Kien Clawson, Brandon, Jordon, Michael, and Nicole Smith, Joey, Alexandria, Kara, Jala Blanchette; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; his beloved mother-in-law Matilda Roberts; and a granddaughter: Kiera Clawson.
