Roy Joe Moore

Roy Joe Moore was born in Decatur, Alabama on December 30, 1937. He was one of three children born from the union of the late Gordon Ray Moore and the late Ruth Lee (Pitt) Moore. Roy was a 1956 graduate of Monroe High School. He married the former Edna Kauffman on October 14, 1961 in Wilmington, Delaware.
Roy was employed by Dundee Cement for more than ten years. He then took employment with the Ford Motor Company working at their Milan plant in maintenance for more than twenty years before retiring in 1999.
Roy was a member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, and he was a member of the Woodcarvers of Monroe. He had been very active with the Boy Scouts and especially Troop 564 formerly associated with Grace Lutheran Church. Roy was also an avid bowler, playing recently in the Senior League at Nortel Lanes, and golfer, playing many rounds in the Milan Golf League over the years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a member of the Gold Wing Riders Association. Roy always placed his family first and he cherished the time spent with children and grandchildren. He often stated that he could fix anything except a broken heart. Roy and Edna also enjoyed traveling.
Roy Moore age 72 of Monroe passed away at 10:20am, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Regional Heart and Vascular Center. His passing was preceded by his parents.
He is survived by his wife: Edna of Monroe; and their five children: Laura Leege of Monroe, Rick Moore of Newport, Russell (Tamela) Moore of Monroe, Lisa (John) McLaughlin of Monroe, Ryan Moore of Flat Roc; also a daughter: Debbie Turrentine of Newport; two sisters: Sharon (Jimmy) Hill of Trinity, Alabama and Theresa (Ray) Leathery of Monroe; twelve grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 8:00pm, Sunday, May 9, 2010 and from 12:00pm until 8:00pm, Monday, May 10, 2010 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 10:00am until a Celebration of His Life at 11:00am, Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, 14260 South Dixie Highway. The Rev. Roy Southerland pastor of the church will officiate. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.
