Roy E. Knight was born in Ash Township on March 16, 1921. He was one of six children born from the union of the late John and Cora (Zoeger) Knight. Roy graduated from the Longbridge Elementary School in 1935. He joined the United States Army during World War II and served his country honorably, earning several accommodations including the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific with two Battle Stars, and a Purple Heart, after being wounded in Okinawa, Japan. Roy married his teenage sweetheart and the love of his life, Phyllis J. Dazarow on July 19, 1952 at St. Charles Church. From this union would come the birth of their daughter, Janet. Roy was a wonderful, loving supportive husband and father. For thirty-five years, Roy provided for his family employed in the maintenance department of Detroit Edison until retiring in 1981. Roy was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing for more than seventy years. During the summer months, he spent time gardening at home. Roy often loved to vacation in Northern Michigan, but more than anything cherished his family and friends. Roy was a long time member of the Carleton VFW Post 4093, serving on the honor guard and often playing euchre with the guys. He was a proud member of Disabled American Veterans, First Presbyterian Church, and the Utility Workers Union of America Local 1223. Roy E. Knight, age 94, of Newport passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2015.
