Una Marie Zolkosky was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 9, 1937. She was one of nine children born from the union of the late Vincent Zolkosky and the late Billie (Melville) Zolkosky. Una attended Airport Community Schools graduating from the high school in 1955. She married the love of her life, Clyde J. Ploeger, in June 1958. From this union would come the birth of four children. Una was a vibrant and strong-willed woman. She served her family as a homemaker, proudly looking after her husband, children, and home. Una's house was always open and she loved to share with family and friends. Una joined 4-H as a leader in 1970. She dedicated herself to the organization and quickly found herself taking on responsibility as a middle manager and goat superintendent. For their work Clyde and Una received a meritorious service award. She had a huge heart for animals often opening her home for strays and rescues many of whom were placed with her by the DNR for rehabilitation. Over the years she had raccoons, a ferret, goats, a deer, and even a fox. Una was also gifted with a green thumb, and time and time again she grew the most succulent tomatoes.
