A man never had a better friend than Bernd. Since 1956, we were like brothers. We did so many things together that I could write for days, and not include them all. We had great Dads, great Moms, a Bernd was part of our family from day one. From kindergarten to graduation in 1969, and throughout our adult lives, I was thankful for the guy who was ten days older than me.
This is a photo my Mom took of us in the summer of 1970, at my house. Then there is a picture from around 1960 of us at Bernd's house, that his Mom took during a romp in the snow. I loved my best friend, Bernd Freiny, and always will.

Like Bernd, I have the honor of being named after my great-great Uncle Emil. Bernd with Aunt Ella(his mother), Aunt Bertha(Freiny)Becker, Uncle Emil(his father)and Uncle Fritz Becker now all in heaven together. From Bernd being born in Germany then to America, never know where life will take you.

Everything Bernd said was so interesting, stories of his life experiences, his love for family, such a positive and funny outlook on life. His unique hugs were the best. When Bernd and Linda opened their home to family there was always good food and love, especially love. Will miss you deeply, please give Uncle Emil and Aunt Ella a hug for me.

Bernie was truly one of a kind! I had the honor to work with him at DSC. He was always so kind, and always made sure to say good morning everyday! He would often show me photos of his grand babies, and his face would just light up with joy when he would talk about his family! He was always helpful, and he was so intelligent. I often thought of Bernie as an "uncle" because he just had such a wonderful personality and was fun to be around! He always made sure our work family got our lottery pools and football squares in and was happy to see the people that would win! More than anything else, our lives are better for knowing Bernie and he will never be forgotten and greatly missed by so many people. My heart, sympathies and prayers, go out to Linda, Annalise, Erich, his grand babies, his family, friends and all who knew Bernie.

I met Bernd in 1956, just before we started kindergarten at Wright School, in our neighborhood. We were best friends from the beginning, and have been ever since. We played baseball, had snowball fights, went to McDonald's for .25 burgers when we were teenagers, went to Tiger games with his Dad and Uncle Fritz in the '50s and '60s, and so much more. We stayed in touch by phone in our adult years, and I was honored to have Bernd as my best man when I married Debbie. I was so blessed to know Bernd. Praying always for you, Linda, Anneliese, Erich, Melissa, Lukas, Nathan, and Kaylin.

Linda and family, I was very sad when I heard about Bernd passing away. I met Bernd when we were children attending Zion Lutheran Church in Marshall. We became good friends, hanging out and playing softball on the church team. I remember winning many league championships with Bernd. I always looked forward to seeing Bernd when attending our class reunions. I will miss him but I know he is in heaven with Jesus and there is no better place. May the Lord grant you his peace and comfort.
