Obituary of Robert Carnell
Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 31, 1923 from the union of the late Lenon O. Carnell and the late Lucille (Kiene) Carnell. He grew up in Toledo and in 1941 graduated Libbey High School. He married Marilyn Dusseau on September 27, 1964.
In 1942, out of love for country, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served throughout the remainder of World War II. Sergeant Carnell considered it routine work to fly 26 hour shuttle bombing missions over the vast Pacific Ocean. He was an Assistant Engineer-Right Waist Gunner of the "Salty Sal" Liberator bomber. He was credited with shooting down a Japanese Fighter Plane, during a daylight raid on Truk in the Marshall Islands on July 6, 1944. Sergeant Carnell received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, and a good conduct ribbon.
After his Air Force service, Robert took a sales position. This position would turn into more than forty-seven years of employment in the home improvement and remodeling business.
Robert was a simple man. He enjoyed spending time with his sweetheart Marilyn. Their favorite pastime was spent together; watching hummingbirds from their screened porch.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving wife of Temperance, a beloved son: Tim (Carol) Carnell of Reno, Nevada.
During his last illness Robert had set his anniversary as a personal goal to look forward to. On Saturday Robert and Marilyn celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary.
Robert Leon Carnell, age 85, of Temperance passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday morning; September 28, 2008. His beloved Marilyn was at his side.
