Mary Patricia Ankney January 13, 1942 - November 20, 2014 Mary Patricia (Benson) Ankney was born in Lafayette, Indiana on January 13, 1942. She was one of five children born from the union of the late John and Roxy (Lasser) Benson and attended Monroe schools. Mary supported her family as a Bartender at the American Legion Post #193 for sixteen years. All who knew Mary loved her and was drawn to her sweet and loving spirit. Family was most important to her, she cherished her children and adored her grandchildren. Mary appreciated the outdoors attending to her vegetable, flower and tree gardens and cherished the times spent with her husband and father deer hunting. As an avid horse fan, though Mary did not ride, she enjoyed taking care of them and had quite a horse and Native American memorabilia collection. Also, Mary liked to travel just about anywhere, road trips were her favorite. In her quiet time, Mary enjoyed crocheting and leather work along with cuddling with her canine companion, "Blondie," watching her favorite crime dramas, Westerns or scary ghost movies. Mary, age 72, of Luna Pier passed away at MagnumCare of Monroe on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 4:35pm. In addition to her parents, her passing was preceded by one brother: Dewitt Pollard; three sisters: Mary (Beacher) Metzger and Betty Fuhr and Tid; and a niece who was like a sister: Margret Hummer. To cherish her memory she leaves her two daughters: Dawn (Mark) Schmidt of Petersburg and Roxanne Bucklew of Toledo; one son: Charles (Pam) Ankney; four grandchildren: Melissa (Eric) Jambor of Petersburg, Nicole (Nik Kellerbauer) Schmidt of Temperance, John Ankney of Luna Pier, and Christopher (Billie) Bucklew of Toledo; one brother-in-law: Elzie Fuhr of California; and one sister-in-law: Marilyn Pollard of Nashville, Tennessee. Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on November 24, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 9156 Summit Street Erie, Michigan (734)848-5185. A celebration of Her Life will take place at 11:00am also at Merkle's with Reverend Mark Wellhousen officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle. Memorial donations are suggested to Mercy Memorial Hospice or the Humane Society.
