Victor Walter Gensler
April 28, 1919 - November 22, 2014
Victor Walter Gensler was born in Monroe on April 28, 1919. He was the son of the late Walter C. and Ella (Bower) Gensler. Victor was a 1937 graduate of Monroe High School where he played the saxophone in the band. He was drafted into the United States Army on April 24, 1941. He attended Teachers College to learn how to fly and become a pilot. Victor was discharged honorably on November 4, 1945.
He married the love of his life the former Ethel L. Tolen on October 2, 1944 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Toledo. The couple would share in the birth of three children. For a time Victor worked as a meat cutter for Packer Grocery and later in insurance sales for National Life. In 1950 he went to work as a truck driver, for OR Hayden, Great Lakes and spent the last ten years of his thirty-two career employed at Jones Transfer. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 299.
Victor was a life member of Monroe VFW Post 1138 and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He had enjoyed dancing with Ethel, bowling, and tinkering on cars.
Victor, age 95 of Monroe passed away, Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Wellspring Lutheran Services. His loving family was by his side. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by a daughter: Linda McBee on August 12, 1993; a son: Gary Gensler on June 17, 2002; his beloved wife: Ethel on March 28, 2008; and his brother: Orville "Lefty" Gensler.
To cherish his memory he leaves a son: Richard (Lynne) Gensler of Monroe; a daughter-in-law: Anne Gensler Schwab (Jack Schwab) of Monroe; nine grandchildren: Scott (Sarah) Gensler, Kellie Reau, Marc Gensler, Paul Gensler, Jeff McBee, Valerie (Dave) Schaefer, Katie (Larry) Russeau, Michael (Becky) Gensler, and Nicole (Anthony) Piepscak; and sixteen great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 10:00am until a funeral service at 11:00am, Wednesday, November 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 323 Scott. Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth will officiate and procession will follow to Roselawn where graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138.
