Harold Daniel Straub
December 13, 1921 - April 4, 2012
Harold Daniel Straub was born in London Township, Michigan on December 13, 1921. He was the son of the late John Straub and Catherine (Schneff) Straub. After graduating high school, Harold enlisted in the United States Army where he served honorably and earned the rank of Lt. Colonel. He later joined the National Guard. Harold married Marie Lee in 1986 in Toledo, Ohio.
Harold was employed by the Ford Motor Company at their Monroe Plant as a cutter and grinder for many years. He was best known for his immense community involvement. Harold was a life-time member of the American Legion and the Reserve Officers' Association. He was former Commodore of the Monroe Boat Club, Commander of the Moose Lodge, Monroe Charter Township Supervisor, Director of the Office of Civil Preparedness for Monroe County, and Ombudsman of France Stone Company. Harold also served on a host of other boards and was a member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church.
Harold was a wonderful man with an amazing sense of humor and a fondness for children. He loved people, especially his family. He was a fantastic husband and a terrific father. He was known as Papa to his grandchildren, whom he adored. Harold enjoyed golfing, boating, and traveling with his RV. He was also creative and took pleasure in woodworking, jewelry making, and making figurines out of peach pits.
Harold Straub, age 90, passed away Wednesday morning April 4, 2012 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. His passing was preceded by his parents; five brothers: Lawrence, Leo, Richard, Bernard, and John; and four sisters: Cleta, Gertrude, June, and Ruth; and his former wife: Betty L. (Schuster) Straub.
To cherish his memory, Harold leaves his beloved wife Marie (Lee) Straub of Monroe; five children: Sandra (Robert) Switney of Grape, Daniel (Karen) Straub of Monroe, Terrie (Skip) First of Texas, Penny Harper of LaSalle, Brenda (Mike) Michalak of Sylvania, Ohio; twelve grandchildren: Richard, Michelle, Michael, Randy, Julie, Brad, Bryan, Kim, Jeffery, Colleen, Karen, and Michael; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In accordance with his wishes no public services have been planned. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 has been entrusted with his arrangements.
