Robert Louis Hovizi was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 12, 1940. Robert was one of two children born from the union of the late Louis Hovizi and the late Helen (Kozma) Hovizi. He was confirmed in the Hungarian Reformed Church of Allen Park. Robert was very active in the local 4-H group from 1947 to 1959, and won many blue ribbons with his steers. He attended Dundee Schools and because of his size was a valuable asset to the Vikings football team as an End Guard. Bob graduated with the Dundee High School class of 1959. During his youth and until 1976, when the business was sold; he had helped his parents operate the Hovizi Greenhouse & Flowershop that was located on South Custer Rd. (This was one of the mainstays in the community where if you wanted your flowers done beautifully and on time that was the place to go!!) Following graduation, Robert hired in as one of the first employees of the Dundee Cement Plant (also known as Holcim). Bob worked as a quarry heavy equipment operator. His career would span more than forty years. Robert was a member of the United Cement Lime & Gypsum Workers International Union #403, and sat as the President during the 1970's. Bob was very active in the community as a member of the Knights of Pythias; Dundee Order, the Dundee Senior Citizens Board of Directors, where from 1985-1988 he served as the architect and designer of Senior Citizens remodeling project, and was a former member of the Monroe Senior Center. Robert enjoyed barbecuing, Hungarian food and heritage, crosswords, spending time with his grandchildren, Classic Movies, debating religion and politics, farming, and praise and worship. He had also earned his pilots license in 1965 and enjoyed flying his single engine plane from Gradolph Field quite often. For the past year he had attended the Victory Temple Church in Monroe. On January 15, 2009 Robert married the former Kathleen Cooley in Toledo, Ohio. Robert Louis "Bob" Hovizi Sr. age 69 of Monroe was called to the Kingdom of Heaven this past Lord's Day on, December 27, 2009. His family rejoices in this his greatest achievement- salvation! In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by one son: Brian Hovizi in 1992 and a former spouse Shirline Burkey in 2006. He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife: Kathy of Monroe; one son: Robert (Laurie) Hovizi Jr.; two daughters: Julie (Pat) Fouts and Sarah Hovizi; several step children; one sister: Shirley Gradolph of Lake Worth, Florida; a host of grandchildren and step grandchildren, and several step great grandchildren. According to Robert's wishes all services have been private and Cremation has taken place. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734)384-5185 was entrusted with his arrangements.
