Andrew John Meyer
Andrew John Meyer, sixty-four of Newport, passed away peacefully cradled in the arms of his devoted wife on the morning of December 2, 2010 at Oakwood Southshore Hospital after a courageous battle with a rare brain disease. His sister Sandy was also at his side.
Andrew was born on February 24, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of Andrew Meyer and Pearl (Manor) Meyer.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1964 and entered the Army in December 1965. Andrew served his overseas duty in Germany. He was employed by Ford Motor Company at the Rawsonville Plant in Ypsilanti for over thirty years, retiring in 1998. He was also a member of the Frenchtown Volunteer Fire Department Station #4 from 1972 to 1986.
On August 14, 2009 he married the true love of his life and soul mate, Denise Sovey, on the Island Rumb Sail Boat in Lake Erie.
Spending time with family and friends in Michigan and at his home in Florida were some of the most treasured moments he had. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and walking five miles every day.
Andrew was a loyal son, loving husband, wonderful brother, proud uncle, and loyal friend to many people from childhood to adulthood. He was devoted to his mother whom he cared for in the last years of her life.
He is survived by his loving wife, a sister Sandra Windels of Newport, nephews and nieces Gerald Windels, Thomas (Carrie) Windels, Susan (Kevin) LaBeau, and Sandra (Michel) Adkins-Tahmouch, Kymberlee Flores, Erika Sovey, Chase Sovey, and Mason Sovey; great nieces and nephews Chelsea, Sarah, Emilee, Jennafer, Andrew, Kyle, Ryan, Layla, and Tomas; and great-great nephew Chase.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Pearl Meyer and an infant brother, William.
Friends may gather from 1:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday; December 8, 2010 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe St. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday; December 9, 2010 with Clark Greene, a childhood friend, officiating.
